On May 25, 2018 several classes of 12 yr old children, in the Abbotsford School District, completed a controversial survey without written parental consent.
The McCreary Centre Society, sends out a survey to school districts to participate in, voluntarily. It offers two consent form options- passive consent (no signature required) and active consent (parent/guardian signature required.) Kevin Godden, superintendent, made the choice for passive consent. A letter that was sent home but did not require a signature. I did not receive the letter. I was able to read the survey, but was not allowed to keep a copy. Some of the questions on the survey were,
"When was the last time you seriously considered killing yourself ?
How many times have you cut yourself?
What type of pregnancy prevention do you use when you have sex? (Withdrawal- pulling out . Or none needed (same sex partner.)
What was the age of the person you had sex with? Under 12, 12-16, 16-20, 20+? When was the last time you drank five alcoholic drinks in under an hour ? "
This survey was given to 12 year olds. Without any context to support such big topics- only a 1-800-SUICIDE business card stapled to the front. These children are not at the age of consent and are being forced to think on criminal activity. If you would like to be aware of surveys like this before your child participates in it, please sign and share this petition.
Demand a parent/guardian signature on the McCreary survey. Demand to use your right to parental consent. Make it your decision when to talk to your children about such issues.
