Asbestos was a popular insulation material for the better part of last century, but its use was phased out in the 1970s after it became linked with the lung disease mesothelioma. Though the 1976 Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA) aimed to ban materials like asbestos, loopholes in the Act make it easy for manufacturers to conceal dangerous ingredients in their products.
Americans may think asbestos is completely banned in the U.S., but over 10,000 people continue to die each year from asbestos-related diseases. Thought the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals has banned new uses of asbestos, they refuse to ban existing uses of asbestos in clothing, building supplies and automotive products. Workers who are exposed to asbestos bring home particles of the toxic substance on their shoes and clothing, putting their families and pets at risk.
