In a recent low key statement, Director L. Francis Cissna says U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services is forming a special task force whose purpose will be to identify naturalized U.S. citizens whose citizenship should be revoked.
Cissna claims that only people who were naturalized after committing fraud will be impacted. However, there is concern that it may also affect people who have made honest mistakes during the naturalization process. It is also possible that altogether innocent people's lives could be affected by simple bureaucratic error.
Such fraud is not a problem warranting the creation of a task force. Since 1990, around 300 people have been convicted of such a crime.
What it does is open the door to persecution of immigrant groups who've done exactly what they were supposed to, having patiently jumped the many legal hurdles and waiting many years. To suddenly strip someone of their citizenship is, at the least, cruel but, more likely, is simply unconstitutional.
