Tell Fisheries Minister: Shark Fins are NOT Sustainable!

  • da: Chris Wolverton
  • destinatario: Western Australia Fisheries Minister Norman Moore

Western Australia's Fisheries Minister recently announced his plan to seek sustainable, or "green" certification for local shark finning which regional fishermen want to export to China, Hong Kong and Taiwan. Sustainable certification would portray shark fins, a highly controversial food, as environmentally friendly.

Shark fin soup is considered a delicacy and high-status dish in certain Asian countries, but it has been banned in the state of California, Toronto and, more recently, in Costa Rica. Sharks are a threatened species, and most fins are obtained by chopping them off and releasing the sharks back into the ocean to drown and die. In addition to being cruel, this practice wastes the entire body of the shark which could be used for food.

Shark finning is wasteful, inhumane, completely unnecessary and in no way environmentally friendly. Please sign the petition to tell Normal Moore to end his efforts to seek sustainable certification for shark finning.

To: Norman Moore, Western Australia Fisheries Minister

We, the undersigned, are concerned with your efforts to seek sustainable certification for local shark finning.
