Say no to the EU supporting oppression in Sudan and Eritrea

Torture. Execution. A dictatorship. How far will we go? Are these the new values of Euope? The EU is considering supporting repressive regimes Sudan and Eritrea as part of moves to curb refugee influx and migration from Africa to Southern Europe. This would further crush the rights of persecuted citizens seeking safety. Please sign this petition to demand the EU commit to  a more humane response to migration and asylum seeking.

The draft proposals for the Better Migrant Management project suggest providing assistance to Eritrea's judiciary. Eritrea is considered by Human Rights Watch to have amongst the worst human rights in the world, with a prevalance of arbitrary detentions, political repression, torture, sexual abuse, and unlawful executions. Those seeking a safer life should be supported by the EU.

The draft also includes plans to provide Sudan’s security services with more equipment and funds. Sudan follows Sharia law, and uses both stoning and crucifixion as methods of punishment.

Sara Tesorieri, a policy adviser at Oxfam, said: “These ‘country packages’ would make us complicit with dictatorships and deny basic fundamental rights to people fleeing wars, famine and extreme poverty … The commission should be ashamed of this proposal.”

If enough people sign, we can send the message to the EU that we want to treat our global neighbours with compassion, and that we do not want to support oppressive regimes.
