The New York City Marathon Needs to Reduce the Amount of Waste It Produces

It takes a lot of water to hydrate runners in a marathon, and with it comes a lot of waste, too. But as London just proved, it doesn't have to.

This year, the Harrow half marathon banned single-use plastic bottles, providing Ooho, water that comes in biodegradable packaging made out of seaweed, instead. In fact, several physical competitions in the U.K. are experimenting with biodegradable packaging for water and sports drinks.

And we think it's time for the U.S. to follow suit!

Please sign this petition urging the New York City Marathon to lead the way and reduce its environmental impact by providing water in biodegradable packaging!

This year, the New York City Marathon plans to dispense water in recyclable cups at water stations throughout the course. But let's face it, recycling just isn't cutting it. Yes, recycling is better than nothing, but it still has a massive waste footprint. We need to aggressively reduce the amount of waste we produce, and eliminating single-use cups and bottles is a great way to start — especially when alternatives already exist!

The New York City Marathon could be a real leader in the fight to save our planet. Please join in demanding a biodegradable alternative to single-use cups and bottles at this year's marathon!
