Stop Government Persecution of Bushmen in Botswana

  • da: Judith B.
  • destinatario: Ian Khama, President of Botswana

The Kalahari Bushmen of Botswana have been experiencing constant abuse from officials, including forced evictions, the separation of parents and children, the dismantling of their water sources, unlawful arrests, and restriction of their movements.

The High Court of Botswana has already ruled that such persecution is unlawful, twice, but it continues.

Forcing an entire people to live in fear and violating their most basic human rights is beyond appalling.

Both morally and according to Botswana’s own laws, the tribe have the rights to remain on their ancestral lands, hunt there and have access to water. It’s not the Bushmen who are breaking the law – it’s the government officials.

Tell the Botswana government to ensure that the Bushmen do not have to suffer any more of this unlawful persecution.

We the undersigned ask that you end the persecution of the Bushmen immediately. The human rights abuses they have been and still are subject to include, but are not limited to, forced evictions, unwarranted arrests and the separation of families. These have been ruled unlawful by the High Court twice, but apparently still continue.

This situation is disgraceful, immoral and illegal, and we ask that you take action to end it as a matter of the utmost urgency.

Thank you for your attention.
