The FWISD School Board is considering terminating the established Art Program for the students who attend Metro Opportunity High School. Metro has a proven track record to connect with the students both socially and emotionally. This art program has been designed and administered to directly and positively effect both growing the craft learned through the mechanics of making art and the emotional, meditative and healing affects which simultaneously occurs during the the time the student spends in this class. Metro serves students who are challenged in many ways; the Metro Statistics are; 98% Minority-Students of Color; 74% Students on free lunch, 8% students on reduced lunch; 82% Economically Disadvantaged (Public School Review www.publicschoolreview.com). The program serves students using a Restorative Practice Model. This revolutionary model at Metro Opportunity High School has been visited by 20+ leaders in alternative programs from Texas and other States. It gets in touch with the students social, emotional and mental development. It has been an instrumental tool to connect with these young people and bring them back into the academic world by giving them a mechanism to communicate through the craft of making art. It would be a detriment to these young people and the entire curriculum to extract this from the overall culture. We citizens are committed to a "My Community My Child" philosophy of whole brain & whole heART development. Interrupting negative thinking patterns through inserting the power of both the logic and abstract mind. Its imperative we offer every young person, especially these students at Metro, every tool we have to offer for the sake of all of our future!
