Justice for Nonverbal Teen Who Had Her Only Form of Communication Taken Away!

Carly Fleischmann is a 17-year-old activist for people with autism. Autistic herself, she is also nonverbal, and is only able to communicate through her computer and by typing on her iPad.

The iPad is like Carly's voice, which is why it was so devastating for an airline attendant to tell her to put it away before a flight. A frequent flier, she is usually able to have an exception made for her because of her situation.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) requires that passengers turn off electronics during take off and landing. However, experts say that these devices don't interfere with airplane equipment. Plus, they can be put in "Airplane Mode".

iPads and similar devices are important for many individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorders. Please tell the FAA that they need to recognize this and change their regulations as well as educate airlines about technology and autism so that this doesn't happen again!

Dear Federal Aviation Administration,

Recently a 17-year-old named Carly Fleischmann was told to put her iPad away on a flight. Normally this wouldn't be an issue, but Carly is nonverbal and autistic, and using her iPad is the only way she can communicate with others. Basically, it is her voice.

iPads and similar devices, based on testing, do not interfere with airplane equipment. Besides, they can be put in "Airplane Mode", which turns off their radio signals.

These devices are very important for many people that have Autism Spectrum Disorders. Please change regulations involving them and educate airlines about autism and technology.

Thank you for your time.
