Same sex marriages have already been approved in Australia and dozens of couples have taken advantage of the opportunity to tie the knot and pledge their love and commitment to one another.  Just this past October, a law was passed to allow for same-sex marriages but now those that have been married since its passing are being annulled. The Federal law states it must be an institution between a man and a woman while the Australian Capital Territory's law says it should stand because it governs couples outside the federal definition of marriage as being between members of the opposite sex. Prior to 2004, marriage under the Marriage Act was defined as a union between two people until it was changed to state a man and a woman.  

"The Marriage Act does not now provide for the formation or recognition of marriage between same sex couples. The Marriage Act provides that a marriage can be solemnized in Australia only between a man and a woman," the court said in a statement issued alongside its ruling. "That Act is a comprehensive and exhaustive statement of the law of marriage."   A spokesman for the advocacy group of Australian Marriage Equality said his group knows of about 30 or more same-sex couples who have married since recently but now the ruling means their marriages are now nullified. It is a defeat for marriage equality. Marriage equality is about love, commitment, family and fairness.
