In Youngsville, North Carolina, more than 20 dogs were seized from Green Meadow Kennels, an unlicensed boarding facility run by Anne-Marie Green. Investigators found dogs kept in insufficient space, without adequate food, in unsanitary conditions. One of them, a Rottweiler named Goober, died while in Green's care. Another dog, a white pit bull named Relish, arrived at his foster home with severe swelling and visible injuries.
Green was originally charged with 16 counts of animal cruelty, including one tied directly to Goober's death. But Franklin County District Attorney Mike Waters has dropped the charge related to Goober's death, citing insufficient evidence that Green's actions caused it, and the remaining 15 charges are now under a deferred prosecution agreement. If Green completes a mental health assessment, community service, and up to two years of probation, those charges will be dismissed entirely and will never result in a conviction.
Eric Kim, the foster caregiver who took in Relish and saw the dogs' injuries firsthand, has publicly questioned how a facility in this condition can result in no lasting accountability. I share that question. An unlicensed kennel that held more than 20 dogs in documented unsafe conditions, where at least one dog died, deserves more than a path to having the charges wiped away.
I'm asking District Attorney Mike Waters to reconsider the terms of this agreement and to ensure Goober's death is not the charge that gets quietly dropped. I'm also asking North Carolina lawmakers to close the loophole that allowed an unlicensed kennel to operate at this scale in the first place, so the next Goober never ends up in a facility like this one at all.
