The Attack on Clean Cars Just Got Worse

At the request of automaker lobbyists and their trade groups, the Trump administration has proposed completely scrapping the rules on clean car standards after 2020.  Not only that, but the administration is also moving to end states' authority to set stronger standards to address local air pollution.

The government agencies behind this move are manipulating the science in order to defend their proposed changes. Many scientists have come out publicly to express their shock and anger that their research has been misrepresented to attack clean cars and hinder our progress on climate change.

The reality is that the clean car standards, which were implemented after years of research and intensive review, are currently reducing oil consumption, cutting global warming pollution, leading to significant benefits for public health, creating jobs, and saving consumers billions at the pump! And now, they may completely disappear unless we do something.

Tell the Trump administration that you've had enough of them manipulating science and putting industry interests over the people of the United States.

To: Acting EPA Administrator Andrew Wheeler and NHTSA Deputy Administrator Heidi King

Your decision to not only flatline the federal global warming emissions and fuel economy standards but also scrap states' authority to set or opt into stronger standards is an attack on the public. These standards, which were implemented in 2012, remain the country's most successful climate initiative. They have made cars and trucks more efficient than ever before: reducing oil consumption, cutting global warming pollution, benefitting public health, creating jobs, and saving American consumers billions at the pump!

These standards were implemented after years of research and intensive review by your agencies, and even had the sign-off by the automakers. Auto companies are already meeting, and some exceeding, the standards today, and they have the technology to meet the standards through 2025. There is consumer demand for more efficient vehicles and much of the technology to meet these standards already exists. It is your job to ensure automakers continue to innovate and make our cars and trucks go further on a gallon of gas.  Your proposal unfortunately fails to protect the people of America.

In addition, it is a shame that your agencies are ignoring the strong scientific work that has been done and are instead manipulating the data to make it fit your needs. Many scientists have come out publicly to express their shock and anger that their research has been misrepresented to attack clean cars and hinder our progress on climate change.

I urge you to reconsider and instead write strong standards like the ones that were proposed in 2012 (and upheld by EPA in 2017).
