We stand by Sec. Liza Largoza-Maza, GABRIELA Chairperson Emerita, Lead Convenor of the National Anti-Poverty Commission (NAPC), in the face of the warrant of arrest issued by the court in relation to recycled 2006 fake murder charges against her and former Bayan Muna Reps. Satur Ocampo and Teddy Casiño, and former Agrarian Reform Sec. Rafael Mariano.
Liza Maza is a well-known leader of the women's movement in the Philippines, staunch women and human rights activist who has fought for the people's cause for several decades now. Her work as an activist-legislator in Congress has complimented the mass campaigns of the grassroots movements for women's, workers' and peasants' rights. She authored and co-authored laws that serve to uphold and protect women and children's rights and welfare including the Magna Carta of Women, Anti-Trafficking of Persons Act, Juvenile Justice and Welfare Act, Philippine Nursing Act, Anti-Torture Law, Rent Control Act of 2009, and the Anti-Violence against Women and their Children Act. She brought her experience and skills when invited to serve the people through government service and now this very same government persecutes her using fabricated charges.
We appeal and urge the Duterte government to stop its campaign to demonize perceived opposition and drop all charges against Liza Maza, Rafael Mariano, Satur Ocampo, and Teddy Casiño and ensure that they can safely continue their work in serving the most marginalized women and Filipino people.
