New South Wales' shark net removal program has been a huge success!

Sign now to congratulate the New South Wales Government on its successful program and encourage officials to expand shark net removal to other beaches!

For years, scientists and advocates have been sounding the alarm on the dangers of shark nets. These nets, originally implemented in the early 1900s to theoretically protect people from shark bites, don't actually protect humans at all. In fact, research suggests that 40% of sharks are actually caught on the inside of the net, closer to land - meaning those sharks have already swam near the beach the nets are intended to protect.

These nets aren't just useless at protecting humans. They're actively dangerous to sharks and other species. In a single year, over 250 marine creatures were caught in the nets, and only 36% were released alive. Over 90% of animals caught in these brutal nets weren't even sharks at all. In fact, because these nets catch and kill so indiscriminately, we can't even protect endangered species from their grasp.

Even though the evidence is overwhelming, coastal cities have been slow to implement common-sense policy. Since the nets were introduced in the 1930s, many communities have felt a false sense of security from their presence. But the research is clear: shark nets don't prevent shark bites.

Finally, New South Wales piloted a program that proves what so many of us have known for years: removing shark nets is essential for protecting countless innocent animals! It also helps local authorities focus on solutions that actually help protect people from shark attacks in ways that aren't lethal to sharks or any other marine life.

Clearly, shark nets have got to go. New South Wales taking steps to eliminate them is an amazing victory for sharks and other marine wildlife! We must encourage New South Wales to expand this program that has already proven successful. Sign the petition now if you agree!
