Illinois: Investigate Allegations of Animal Cruelty!

A Chicago Tribune investigation found that Illinois, one of the country's leading suppliers of pork products, has been brushing off allegations of animal abuse and allowing pig farms to pollute rural communities with little consequence.

As consumers grow more conscious of animal rights, other states have been taking animal abuse allegations seriously. But Illinois continues to turn a blind eye to employee whistleblower reports. In one case, investigators simply called a facility to ask whether employees were beating pigs with metal bars. Obviously, this practice does nothing to hold suppliers accountable for animal abuse crimes.

Large-scale pig farms are also devastating their surrounding environments. Over a 10-year period, pig waste from these farms drifted into waterways, killing over 490,000 fish in 67 miles of waterways. Rural citizens have also complained that the stanch from these farms caused headaches and congestion, and permeated their clothes and hair, causing social embarrassment and compromising their quality of life.

Please sign the petition to urge Illinois to launch a statewide investigation into animal abuse complaints at pork farms, and to reform their regulations to better address environmental, animal abuse and labor concerns raised in the Tribune's investigation.
