I am writing today to voice my support for the Petroleum Operations Maritime Zone Moratorium Bill, which would safeguard Belize’s marine assets from the inherent threats of offshore oil activity.
Oil exploration in Belizean waters puts two of the country's most important economic sectors at risk – the valuable and growing tourism industry and the long-standing fisheries industry – as well as the outstanding and invaluable World Heritage sites within the Belize Barrier Reef System.
I stand in solidarity with the tens of thousands of proud and patriotic Belizeans who have maintained opposition on offshore oil in Belizean waters. The future of Belize is in your hands. I know you will ensure Belize’s prosperity by ensuring that offshore oil exploration and development activities never threatens the country’s marine assets.
