Stop the Imminent Execution of a Canadian in Iran

Canadian citizen Hamid Ghassemi-Shall was arrested in May 2008 while visiting his mother in Iran. He was detained in solitary confinement for 18 months until November 2009 when Hamid’s wife in Canada received reports that he had been convicted of espionage and sentenced to death.

Legal proceedings leading to Hamid’s conviction were completely unfair and did not give him the opportunity to defend himself. Lawyers who have reviewed the case concluded that there was no basis for Hamid’s arrest or subsequent detention.

Amnesty International is calling on Iranian authorities to:
- Guarantee that Hamid will not be executed.
- Release Hamid immediately unless he is promptly brought to trial in legal proceedings that fully conform to globally accepted fair trial standards.

Please sign the petition urging Iranian authorities to do away with the death penalty and follow globally accepted fair trial standards.
Your Excellency,

I am writing to express my deep concern for Canadian citizen Hamid Ghassemi-Shall who awaits execution after an unfair trial.

I strongly urge you to:

-- Guarantee that Hamid will not face the death penalty.
-- Ensure the immediate release of Hamid or an immediate fair trial for a recognizable criminal offense.
-- Investigate Hamid’s imprisonment conditions to ensure he is not subject to torture.
