Animal Sentience Left out of Repeal Bill - Urgent Action Needed!

Current European law recognises animals as sentient beings – able to feel pain, suffer and experience joy. The charity Compassion in World Farming campaigned long and hard for this vital recognition for animals.

The status of animals as complex and intelligent creatures has been the cornerstone of European animal welfare legislation since 1997. But now, for British animals, this protection is under threat.

The Repeal Bill, which moves all European law into UK law on departure from the EU, has left out this important clause. It is completely absent; both the recognition of animals as sentient beings, and the requirement for governments to pay “full regard” to their welfare.

If the Repeal Bill is passed as it currently stands, future UK governments will have no obligation to treat animals as sentient beings. Please demand that the clause is brought into UK law.

If British animals are no longer legally recognised as sentient, this could be a disaster for animal welfare. We cannot let this happen. Please sign the petition calling for Michael Gove to take urgent action. Thank you!
Dear Mr Gove,

The EU Treaty recognises animals as sentient beings. Once the UK leaves the EU, we cannot be sure that future governments will still treat animals as sentient beings – so we demand that the Treaty clause is brought into UK law.

Please ensure the Repeal Bill recognises animals as sentient beings, and requires that full regard be paid to their welfare in the formulation of policy.
