Labels can Lie: Don't Support the Dog and Cat Fur Trade

There's a hidden secret behind some faux-fur items. Your lovely bobble beanie might say 'faux fur', but it could easily be dog or cat fur.

Although it's illegal in countries such as Australia, the US, the UK, and much of Europe to sell dog and cat fur, the hidden truth is that millions of cats and dogs are slaughtered every year in China to supply an increasing global demand for fur. Fur trim is so popular in the West, and while we might think of it as an off-cut or a by-product of the meat industry, in fact it's a self-sufficient industry. ACTAsia estimates that in one wholesale market alone, 14 to 21 million dog pelts are traded each year.

Pledge to not buy fur products – it may not be what you think it is. You can help end this trade and educate yourself and your friends and family that labels can lie.

How you can help:

  • Don't buy any fur, unless you're absolutely sure it's fake. As some labels are false, it's best to stay clear of anything that looks like fur
  • Tell your friends and family why you pledge not to buy fur products
  • Look out for keyring pom-poms, bobble hats, bags, hood or boot trim and other accessories. These are very commonly dog or cat fur, although labels typically state rabbit, mink, racoon, various other animals, or faux-fur
  • Share this pledge - inform and educate your friends and family about the brutal truth behind the dog and cat fur industry in China.
