Thank the BC Government for Supporting the Vancouver Island Marmot!

The Vancouver Island marmot, found only in British Columbia, is one of the most critically endangered mammals in the world. Fortunately, thanks to the participation by the Marmot Recovery Foundation, the BC government, Canadian citizens and others, the marmot population is steadily growing. In 1998 there were less than 100 marmots, but in 2007 the population totaled 256! Because of this steady growth, more and more marmots can be released into the wild, with hopes that 400-600 can be released over the next decade.

The Province of British Columbia has ownership and legal responsibility for all Vancouver Island marmots under the BC Wildlife Act of 1980. Thank the BC government for their support, and urge them to continue their commitment to saving this endangered species and Canadian treasure!

Dear Honourable Barry Penner:

The Vancouver Island marmot is one of the most critically endangered mammals in the world, and can be found only on Vancouver Island. I am delighted to see its population steadily rise -- thanks to the efforts of the Marmot Recovery Foundation, the BC government, the forest industry, zoos and private individuals. I would like to express my gratitude towards the Ministry of Environment for its commitment to saving this unique species. The growing success of the marmots shows that when the private sector, public sector and ordinary citizens work together, much can be achieved to preserve our natural heritage.
