Thank Obama for Ending the use of Animals in Combat Trauma Training

The National Defense Authorization Act, (a 681 page document), was recently passed by Congress and signed into law by President Obama. On page 187,  a provision asks the  Secretary of Defense to submit a report to Congress by March 1, 2013, “that outlines a strategy, including a detailed timeline, to refine and, when appropriate, transition to using human-based training methods for the purpose of training members of the Armed Forces in the treatment of combat trauma injuries.”

This act will phase out the use of animals for trauma training in military drills, which in the past has practiced life saving techniques by shooting, stabbing and dismembering live pigs and goats.

More than 95% of trauma training courses are taught using only human-based simulators. The American College of Surgeons has approved nonanimal models like the TraumaMan System, SimMan, and cadavers for these courses. With such advanced alternatives, the use of live animals is outdated and inhumane causing unnecessary animal suffering.

Thank Obama for modernizing military troop readiness and humane medical practices by signing the Act that phases in the use human-based methods in place of live animals.
