Demand better environmental protection for Australian animals

Australia's national environmental laws aren't doing enough to ensure animals and their habitats are protected.

Over the summer, bushfires devastated our country, killing more than 1 billion animals. This shocking loss of animal life left several precious species closer to extinction. The loss of habitat has also caused widespread suffering with many animals left without adequate shelter from the weather and predators.

The bushfire crisis highlighted the vulnerability of our native wildlife and their habitats. That's why we need your help to prevent widespread land clearing and habitat destruction and demand better protection for Australian animals now.

The review period for Australia's environmental legislation, the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 has just concluded, but there is still time to put pressure on the government.

Be a voice for native Australian animals who need stronger protection.

Together we will call on the Australian Government to help strengthen Australia's national environmental laws with the following:

  1. Extend the role of the Commonwealth Government in overseeing the Environmental Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act. This will help ensure consistency across the country, so animals and their habitat are protected across Australia;

  2. Extend the definition of 'Matters of National Environmental Significance' (MNES) to include vulnerable species. Currently, only endangered and highly endangered animals are captured by the legislation and this leaves vulnerable species without proper protection;

  3. Better incorporate the principles of Ecologically Sustainable Development within the legislation and improve the focus on habitat and species protection;

  4. Introduce a national environmental plan with clear goals and metrics for success around the protection of species and their habitats. This plan should take likely impacts of climate change into consideration and it should include a requirement that any proposal that may impact an MNES (including vulnerable species) needs a Commonwealth Environmental Impact Assessment;

  5. Oppose the introduction of self-regulation from industry. To ensure strong protection there needs to be consistent Government oversight and regulation;

  6. Propose the use of 'offsetting' be scaled back or removed entirely as it often fails to provide necessary protection to wildlife and their critical habitats.
