Crippling Conservation Cuts Threaten Birds

America has a proud conservation legacy. But proposed budget cuts would cripple or end the critical programs that protect habitat for birds and restore treasured ecosystems. The President's budget drastically cuts programs like the Land and Water Conservation Fund, EPA programs that are cleaning up the Great Lakes, Long Island Sound, and San Francisco Bay, as well programs that invest in clean energy funding, water conservation, and more.

Please ask your members of Congress to reject this proposal, and instead uphold and support America's conservation programs.

To whom it may concern:

As a constituent who cares about birds and the places they need, I am deeply concerned by the Administration's FY19 budget proposal. I urge you to reject its requested cuts and instead support strong funding for conservation programs that benefit birds and other wildlife, which have a long history of bipartisan support.

Birds depend on dozens of programs that protect and restore habitat in our communities. In the Department of the Interior, the Land and Water Conservation Fund protects local parks and wild places, while the North American Wetlands Conservation Act (NAWCA) and the Neotropical Migratory Bird Conservation Act (NMBCA) have protected and restored millions of acres of habitat for waterfowl and songbirds. Additionally, State and Tribal Wildlife Grants help all fifty states protect at-risk wildlife, while the WaterSMART program conserves water in the face of drought in the West.

Under the EPA, the geographic and estuary programs protect and restore threatened ecosystems across the nation. The Department of Agriculture's Farm Bill conservation programs keep working lands working while protecting habitat, soil, and water. At the Department of Energy, advancing solar technology helps reduce the risks to the 314 North American species of birds threatened by climate change. Finally, NOAA programs, including the National Estuarine Research Reserves, protect vital coasts and estuaries for birds and people.

I hope I can count on you to support America's conservation legacy by fully funding these programs. Thank you.
