McDonald’s: Time to keep your promise and save our antibiotics!

Antibiotic resistance is a growing threat to public health and food security, yet the overuse of medically important antibiotics in healthy livestock has become standard practice in meat production. In 2018, McDonald's committed to reducing the amount of antibiotics in their beef supply, but has missed their own deadline for publicly announcing reduction targets or taking any actionable steps.

As the world's largest purchaser of beef, McDonald's has an opportunity to push the industry towards more responsible antibiotics practices and lessen the global threat of antibiotic-resistant bacteria.

Consumer Reports is sending messages directly to McDonald's CEO and Board, to let them know that action on antibiotic reductions is overdue!

Can you take a few minutes to demand that McDonald's keep its commitment and reduce the use of medically important antibiotics in its supply chain?
I urge McDonald's to honor its December 2018 public commitment to eliminate the use of medically important antibiotics for routine prevention of disease in its beef supplies and establish market-specific reduction targets for these antibiotics in its global beef and dairy beef supply chains.

Doctors are careful about administering antibiotics to preserve their effectiveness, yet industrial farms routinely use these life-saving drugs on healthy livestock. It's time that McDonald's keeps its promises to consumers and takes transparent steps towards reducing antibiotics in its products.
