In the UK some 20 million hens are caged in barren battery cages. Cages so small they cannot stretch their wing. Such severe restriction to movement leads to high levels of osteoporosis and many hens suffer from broken bones.
Organic reared and free range hens have access to the outdoors, nest boxes, perches and litter in their houses, with 12 hens per square meter of indoor space. Barren battery cages house 4 or 5 hens per cage in a space of 550 square cms per hen.
Internationally renowned charity, Compassion in World Farming, have launched the Cage Free Councils campaign and I am delighted to say that 21 councils across the UK have now become cage-free.
With new EU legislation outlawing the traditional battery cage from 2012 farmers will have to adapt to provide either the enriched cage system, barn reared or free-range. If Cornwall Council adopts a free-range policy it will help Cornish egg farmers to secure their future by adapting their production systems to free-range in preparation for the 2012 ban.
Please help make Cornwall a cage-free council.
We the undersigned seek your support for Cornwall County Council to adopt a 'free-range' policy with regards the eggs and foodstuffs containing eggs that you serve at all council run establishments making Cornwall Council a Cage Free Council and helping to alleviate the suffering of battery hens across the country.
In the UK alone some 20 million hens are caged in barren battery cages. Cages so small that hens cannot stretch their wings and are prevented from carrying out natural behaviours. Scientific research shows hens have powerful drives to lay their eggs in a nest, peck and scratch in the ground, dust-bath and perch. None of these behaviours are possible in the barren battery cage. Such severe restriction to movement leads to high levels of osteoporosis and many hens suffer from broken bones.
This suffering is completely unnecessary, non-caged egg production systems improve the welfare conditions for hens. Organic reared and free range hens have access to the outdoors, nest boxes, perches and litter in their houses, with 12 hens per square meter of indoor space. Barren battery cages house 4 or 5 hens per cage in a space of 550 square cms per hen.
