End the killing of shelter animals in Indianapolis

This year, 10,000 healthy dogs and cats will be killed in Indianapolis shelters.

The vast majority of these homeless pets can and should be placed into loving homes or should never enter a shelter in the first place. But there is hope.

No Kill sheltering models, based on innovative programs and services have already saved the lives of tens of thousands of animals in other communities.

Instead of embracing No Kill, our shelters cling to their failed model of the past, a model that results in the unnecessary, tax-funded killing of healthy dogs and cats.

It is time for change.

We the undersigned ask that the City of Indianapolis adopt the No Kill Equation.

The No Kill Equation is a cohesive set of initiatives that have been implemented successfully in a variety of cities and communities around the country resulting in dramatically lower kill-rates of cats, dogs and other companion animals in city shelters, while maintaining public health and safety.

Programs modeled after the No Kill Equation seek to give citizens greater input and involvement in how the shelter operates and they can be implemented on a cost-effective basis. In many cases, these programs are less expensive than killing. In all cases, these programs are a better reflection of the heart of the people of Indianapolis.
