Amami rabbit , or Ryukyu rabbit (Pentalagus furnessi)-an extremely rare rodent that is endemic to two small Japanese islands-Amani-Oshima and Tokumo-Shima. It is often called a living fossil, because it is a descendant of ancient rabbits that lived on the Asian mainland during the Miocene, the appearance of the Amami rabbit Hare is also very different to the structure of the body of their living relatives. His few gruznoe body has a mass of an average of 2.5 to 3 kg, the ears are short-4-5 cm,the tail is even less-1.5 cm. Amami rabbit have short legs, and large curved claws used for digging and climbing trees where they hide from enemies and find food, Amami rabbit is nocturnal, during the day it hides in shelters, and at night it seeks for food, the estimated population is about 2,500 to 4,800 in 2003 and their number is decreasing according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) they are classified as Endangered .
