The first donkey slaughter house opened it's doors in Kenya Rift Valley:Goldox Donkey Slaughterhouse(the company owned by Chinese investor Lu Donglin has paid out nearly Sh20 million in two months) started operations at Chemogoch in Mogotio, Baringo County.To my utter dismay,thefacility received the nod from Agriculture Cabinet Secretary.The facility is targeting China, Russia and other Far East countries where donkey products are in high demand.
To meet its threshold of exporting 100–200 tonnes of the product, the facility must slaughter at least 100 donkeys a day.This act threatens the population of donkeys in Kenya.Universally,donkeys are are known to be "beasts of burden".They provide cheap labor to low income populace in rural set ups.For this reason,they deserve to be treated with humane and utmost protection from exploitation and all forms of cruelty
Equine animals(to which donkeys belongs) are known to transmit to humans diseases such as brucellosis, leptospirosis,anthrax,tetanus,glanders.These diseases are contagious and have a high fatality rate,by commissioning the slaughter of donkeys,this will lead to a corresponding increase of disease burden in the general population
Religiously,the Bible classifies donkey as an unclean animal,to which a prohibition is placed upon the consumption of its flesh.Leviticus 11 and Deuteronomy 14
Due to the foregoing,and as an animal activist,i demand a cessation of the slaughter of donkeys forthwith
