Get Detroit Teachers Back in the Classrooms!

Detroit schools are closing randomly because fed up teachers are calling in sick en mass. The problem isn't just poor pay; it's also unheated classrooms and overly large classes, largely due to the district's terrible debt and previous bankruptcy. The governor's office has a viable plan to pay off the school district's debt and spin off a new district, but for some reason, the state legislature is dragging its feet on approving that plan. Detroit children need their education, just like children in more solvent cities and school districts. Please join me in demanding that the Michigan state legislature move forward with Governor Snyder's plan to pay off the school district's debt and spin off a new district. Let's get teachers back in the classroom.

To the Michigan State Legislature:

We the undersigned are saddened to learn that Detroit schools are randomly closing because of teacher sick strikes. We believe these teachers are not frivolously opting out of work. They are underpaid. Beyond that, class sizes are too big, and some classrooms are not even heated in winter! It's little wonder that your teachers are fed up. While we realize that there is no quick fix, the plan offered by Governor Snyder's office to pay off the school district's debt seems to be the best one in sight. Please approve this plan and get teachers back in the classrooms.
