Stop the Torture of Soni Sori

Soni Sori, a schoolteacher, is currently imprisoned in Raipur Central Jail on charges of working with the banned Communist Party of India--a charge which both Ms. Sori and the Party deny.

In a recent medical report, doctors found stones inserted in Ms. Sori's genital tract and rectum, and in a letter smuggled out of the prison, Ms. Sori states that she was stripped and electrocuted during police interrogation.

Now, women's rights activists concerned about the allegations of torture have been denied access to Soni Sori, due to "security considerations." Over 40 gender and human rights organizations have called on the Chhattisgarh government, police, and prison authorities to allow visitors to see Ms. Sori, who they believe is a victim of custodial torture.

Sign now to stand with these organizations in urging the Chhattisgarh government to investigate the allegations of torture and uphold the rights of Ms. Sori to receive visits from representatives of human rights organizations.
We the undersigned stand with the gender and human rights organizations that seek an investigation into allegations of the torture of Soni Sori while she has been in police custody. In a recent medical report, doctors found stones inserted in Ms. Sori's genital tract and rectum, and in a letter smuggled out of the prison, Ms. Sori states that she was stripped and electrocuted during police interrogation. We urge you to allow representatives of human rights organizations to visit Soni Sori, so that they may ensure her future health and well-being and bring to justice any police or prison authorities who have participated in custodial torture.
