Glendora, CA: Don't Fine People for Conserving Water!

California is suffering from a water shortage, with over 80 percent of the state experiencing extreme drought conditions. To save water, a Glendora couple cut back on watering their lawn, took shorter showers and did larger loads of laundry. Instead of being rewarded for their efforts, they received a $500 fine for having a brown lawn.

Despite Gov. Jerry Brown's goal to reduce water use by 20 percent, last May's water use actually increased one percent. In response, California's State Water Resources Control Board issued a mandatory restriction on wasteful outdoor water use, such as overzealous lawn watering. Residents can be fined up to $500 for violations.

This city is confusing its residents and sending an inconsistent message. While a well-kept lawn increases property values, the state is now in crisis and it is more important to save water. Please sign the petition to tell Glendora to waive the $500 fine issued to this couple and stop issuing any more fines of this nature until the water situation is under control.

We, the undersigned, are writing in response to the $500 fine issued to Glendora couple Laura Whitney and her husband, Michael Korte. As you know, California is suffering from a water shortage, with over 80 percent of the state experiencing extreme drought conditions. Whitney and Korte consciously cut back on watering their lawn, took shorter showers and did larger loads of laundry in an effort to help their state during this crisis. We find it unfair that they were fined for making a sacrifice.

We understand that California is also issuing residents fines for overwatering their lawns.

Glendora is confusing its residents and sending an inconsistent message. While a well-kept lawn increases property values, the state is now in crisis and it is more important to save water. We respectfully urge you to waive the $500 fine issued to this couple and stop issuing any more fines of this nature until the water situation is under control. Thank you for taking the time to read and consider our petition.
