Support Gender Equality Graduation Robes!!!

For years, Gainesville High School has made girls wear white robes and boys wear red robes at graduation,  regardless of their chosen gender identity. This marginalizes a lot of people (including but not limited to those of the LGBT community) and imposes a clear inequality between men and women, an inequality that is both oppressive and harmful to their education.

Gender non-conforming students are not only required to graduate with their birth name, but are still required to wear the robe of the gender on their birth certificate, which invalidates their worth as human beings. What should be one of the proudest and most worked for moments in their life will be instead full of bias, disrespect, inequality, and invalidation.

This year we ordered all red robes so that graduation would be inclusive for ALL seniors. Because of a couple of conservative board members, we are being forced to send those back and order the OLD ROBES again this year now to comply with their exclusive dress code, because they took issue with the previously ordered inclusive robes.

Please sign this petition to use the red robes for EVERYONE and email the superintendent of Gainesville High School to help stop this close-minded decision.

These students worked so hard to graduate, and they deserve to have a graduation free of gender bias, hate, and discrimination. The idea of colors assigned to genders perpetuates the idea that there is an inequality present. One color robe for everyone would be unifying and would prevent the ostracizing of people who don't conform to their assigned gender, and would be a significant step in erasing the gender stereotypes, biases, and discriminations within the educational system.

The superintendent's email is jeremy.williams@gcssk12.net
