The U.S. Government Is Vetting a Reality TV Show Where Immigrants Compete to Earn Citizenship

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is considering whether to approve a plan that would pit immigrants against each other in a reality TV show. The prize they're competing for? U.S. citizenship.

This is an abhorrent way to treat something as precious and meaningful as becoming a citizen, and a horribly disrespectful way to treat immigrants. Their desire to become naturalized should not be turned into entertainment for the masses!

Rob Worsoff, the Canadian writer and producer who helped create the reality show "Duck Dynasty" pitched the idea to the DHS in May 2025. Shockingly, he didn't receive the response he should have - which ought to have been an immediate, automatic "No." Instead, he claims he's heard "positive feedback" from his contacts at the agency.

The obvious comparison this draws is to the dystopian book and movie series, The Hunger Games. But Worsoff claimed his proposal was different. Yet, if the DHS did agree to create such a chilling TV series, it would put very real immigrants in very serious danger. First, it would make their names publicly available. Additionally, reality shows are always edited to create "villains" and "heroes" out of different cast members. Both of these are extremely risky at a time when immigration is becoming so demonized in the U.S.

That doesn't even include the emotional cruelty of putting an immigrant through a whole series of competitions, only to tell them that they've lost the game. Because there would only be one "winner" who is sworn in as a citizen at the end of the game.

Citizenship, immigrants, and the process of naturalization all deserve our respect. It's unbelievable that the DHS hasn't rejected this plan yet. Sign the petition to speak out!
