The names of those convicted of cruelty and abuse against animals need to be kept on a central register — or their bans are effectively useless, it has been warned.

BELOVED PET WAS SET ABLAZE

It was an incident that shocked and horrified animal lovers across Northern Ireland.

Three-year-old Collie Cody suffered horrific burns to most of her body when she was doused in petrol and set on fire in the Maghaberry Road area of Moira.

The young dog's injuries were so severe her ribs and other joints were visible through her burnt flesh — and despite attempts to save the injuries she sustained, they were so severe she had to be put down.

A statement issued on behalf of her distressed family at the time of the incident said they had been left devastated by Cody's death, but they knew “she was suffering and was only going to get even worse”.

Following the young dog's horrific ordeal, a Facebook page set up attracted more than 68,000 supporters.

Two men accused of burning the Co Antrim family's dog to death are set to argue for the charges against them to be thrown out of court.
