To the Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission Montgomery Parks
We propose that M-NCPPC Montgomery Parks include a velodrome in the new Wheaton Regional Park Master Plan. There are many compelling reasons that support the inclusion of a velodrome at Wheaton Regional Park, including:
- Providing cycling opportunities for youth and adult populations from Montgomery County and surrounding areas;
- A very large and active local cycling community that will serve as the immediate user base;
- Velodromes are “safe-havens” for youth and others to actively participate in cycling, offering places that are traffic-free, pedestrian-free, and obstacle-free;
- Providing spectators with viewing opportunities and an education on a tremendous form of recreation for all ages; and
- Complementing existing athletic facilities in the Park and the County with the potential for multi-use of a velodrome, e.g., inline skating.
The nearest velodromes are located three hours away to the north (Allentown, PA), and five hours to the south (Rock Hill, SC). These attract cyclists from a wide geographic area given the lack of velodrome facilities in the Mid-Atlantic region.
