The great Japanese earthquake of March 11th, devastating tsunami, and resulting nuclear plant accidents have forced the area residents to evacuate. Expecting to return in a day or two, the vast majority of the residents evacuated without their family pets. As the situation worsened, on April 22nd, the government ordered the area within 20 km of the Fukushima nuclear plant to be completely off-limits.
As time passed, many of the animals left behind have perished from starvation. In addition, without food and water, those who escaped from the confinement of their homes have been growing weaker and dying by the day. The prefectural animal rescue division set up after the disaster is only staffed with a handful of people. Yet several thousand dogs and cats are estimated to remain in the off-limits areas still.
Left alone, these family pets are destined to die in spite of the hard work of these prefectural workers. There%u2019s simply not enough manpower. We are therefore asking you to urge Prime Minister of Japan, to allow the pet owners and animal rescue groups to enter the off-limits Fukushima nuclear plant vicinity in order to rescue these precious lives. The situation is extremely dire, and action needs to be taken now. Please don%u2019t let the Japanese government abandon these poor dogs and cats.
