Bumiputera is racial discrimination - The Economist

Stop the Bumiputra policy! Malaysia is a multi-ethnic country made from the Malays, Chinese & Indians. The Bumiputra is a term to describe the Malay race. In the 1970s, Malaysian government implemented policies which The Economist called "racial discriminatory" designed to favour bumiputras (including affirmative action in public education) to create opportunities for them. The policies were made with a good intention; it succeeded in creating a significant urban Malay and even a Native Bornean middle class as well.

However, this policy was only efficient 30 years ago. It is too conservative at this moment of time and may even be an excuse for the Bumiputras to be complacent. It is also a waste of economical resources and block the potential that other races may have been able to reach.
