Louisvillians for World-Class Public Transit FIRST!
Louisville is one of the most car-dependent cities in the nation. Driving 27 million miles daily, we are entirely at the mercy of dwindling non-local fossil fuels which drain our local economy, fund terrorism abroad, and pollute our environment. While we are the 7th most dangerous city for pedestrians and the 11th most ozone-polluted, what little public transit we have continues to be cut.
Our transportation system choices will determine the health of our city, its citizens and its economy for decades - and we are at a crucial decision point. We can spend our limited public funds on building out-dated, debt-laden, fossil-fuel intensive interstate highway and bridges projects or we can build a world-class public transit system that will keep Louisville competitive in the 21st century. We must prioritize - we simply cannot afford to do both.
A world-class public transit system will reduce the traffic on our current highways, roads, and bridges, while serving all of our citizens and greatly improving the health and vitality of Louisville's people, neighborhoods, and our local economy. If you believe that Louisville needs a world-class 21st century public transit system BEFORE more obsolete 1950's highway infrastructure, sign this petition today!
Louisville is at a crucial decision point - we can dedicate our increasingly limited funds to building debt-laden, fossil-fuel intensive, new interstate highway and bridges projects or we can build a great public transit system that will keep Louisville competitive in the 21st century. We must prioritize - we simply cannot afford to do both.
Louisville is the 7th most dangerous city for pedestrians and the 11th most ozone polluted - far worse than most larger cities. Driving 27 million miles daily, our car-centric city is entirely dependent on an ever-shrinking supply of non-local fossil fuels - fuels that drain precious dollars out of our local economy, fund terrorism abroad, and pollute our air, water, and land. Meanwhile, Louisville's West End is 70% dependent on public transportation, yet bus routes and services continue to be cut.
For the health of our citizens, our economy, and our collective future, we need world-class public transit...now. We urge you to invest in a world-class public transit system first, before spending money we don't have on more obsolete, fossil-fuel intensive, interstate highway infrastructure.
