In Rochelle, Illinois, a horrifying display of animal abuse took place at a steer tailing event resulting in at least five steers getting their tails ripped off. The event was a cruel display of violence, leaving one steer with a broken leg, while others were left lame. Steer tailing, also known as bull tailing or coleadero, is a rodeo event where a rider yanks a steer's tail to drag or flip the animal to the ground. The practice often causes severe injuries like degloving (where the skin is ripped away from the underlying muscle) and broken bones, and is widely condemned as cruel and inhumane.
Even the concept of tail docking, which is usually done for medical or aesthetic reasons, is opposed by the American Veterinary Medical Association Despite. If tail docking is likely done in the best of circumstances with the appropriate pain medication, how can anyone justify steer tailing?
