Here's betting most of you out there didn't know there was a striped big cat indigenous to the U.S. We didn't. Turns out there is: that adorable mini-leopard, the ocelot, lives in the southern parts of Texas. But it may not for long.
Due largely to un-green building practices and habitat destruction we're trying to shy away from these days (check out any episode of Greensburg for examples of eco-friendly building methods) there are a scant 100 ocelots left in the wild in Texas.
But there'll be more before long if the Environmental Defence Fund has anything to say about it. One of their many green-focused projects is spearheading an effort to protect the tiny population and nurture it back to prominence.
And they're accepting donations to help them in their quest. One look at this gorgeous cat may very well persuade you to give green and help the North American ocelot escape extinction. Even if you don't donate, just being aware that there are still creatures right here on our soil that are endangered can help improve the general attitude towards preventing further careless habitat destruction.
