Colleges are a place where students are supposed to, as Adam Weinerg stated, "thrive in diverse environments, embrace change as a daily reality, think outside boxes and across categories, and possess a mix of personal attributes, including humility, confidence, persistence, empathy, and communication and conflict negotiation skills."
To allow these learnings to occur, Penn State needs to have better security in their residence halls. Students cannot thrive at an environment that seems dangerous, especially for students who are just coming into colleges. Living in dormitories is a whole new experience for freshmen, and if they cannot get a sense of security at a place that they will need to live for the next year or two, they will not thrive in their new environment and will be afraid of doing new things.
We need to make a change. We need to make a change for the incoming freshmen, and for the sense of security that students will get when live in Penn State residence halls. We need to have security desks by the residence halls' door so that students can safely enter the building without anyone "piggybacking" behind them. Without "piggybacking," we will be lessening the potential dangers that can occur in residence halls and can give the students who are living in the halls a sense of security at a place that they will need to live for the next year or two.
