The European hamster (Cricetus cricetus) is threatened with extinction worldwide.

This is confirmed by the World Conservation Union (IUCN).

The European hamster (Cricetus cricetus) is one of the most threatened mammal species in Germany, in some federal states it is already extinct. One of the main causes of its endangerment is the intensification of agriculture.

The animal lives mainly in continental climate. Therefore, the distribution range extends from the steppes of Central Asia through Russia to Eastern Europe. In Central European countries, the European field hamster can only be found in certain regions, more and more in the Czech Republic, Hungary, Slovenia, France and Germany.
The rodent's habitat is limited to rural arable land as well as clay and forest soils.
Nowadays, the European hamster is one of the strictly protected species in this country. A large decrease in population density was achieved by combating the animal as a scenic pest over a very long period of time. Today the catch has developed considerably back, but there are new hazard factors. One of the most important is the loss of natural habitat due to agriculture, great danger are also Pestizides.

But the illegal fur industry also poses a major threat to the small rodent
