Canada: Protect Our Water and Implement a National Watershed Monitoring Strategy

Canada is known across the world as a country full of pristine fresh water. However, this idea does not reflect the realities of the state of Canada's waters.

A new report shows that Canada doesn't know much about the actual health of its watersheds, with little information on its major watersheds, including the Great Lakes watershed that brings water to over a third of the population of the country.

The report examined threats to the five major ocean watersheds as well as 167 river sub-watersheds. It found that threats like pollution and ecosystem destruction are affecting at least on third of all the river watersheds they studied.

However, this picture is incomplete. The information needed to paint an accurate picture of the health and threats to Canada's watersheds is lacking due to improper monitoring.

If Canada wants to preserve its fresh waters, it needs a comprehensive watershed monitoring program to identify risks, threats and places to make changes so that Canada's fresh waters are protected.
