Tell the FDA to Enforce Clearer Labels for Palm Oil Products!
Palm oil, found in numerous soaps, toiletries, and foods, contributes to environmental devastation that puts indigenous people and endangered species at risk. The palm oil industry has grown significantly over the past few decades, and is produced through unsustainable rainforest destruction. Native forests -- and the animals that live within them -- are burned up to make room for oil palm plantations. Emissions of smoke pollute the environment and contribute to climate change.
It's hard to tell which products contribute to this destruction because the presence of palm oil isn't always clear on ingredients lists. In cosmetics, palm oil is called elaeis guineensis. Palm ingredients may also hide behind names such as "palmitate," "sodium isostearoyl lactylaye," "sodium laureth sulphate" and more.
The public deserves to know for certain whether products contain palm oil and contribute to environmental devastation. Please urge the FDA to enforce a clear "palm oil" label on all products that contain it.
