Residents have reported foul smells, discoloration, and health symptoms that may all be related to pollutants in the water supply. Households, children, elderly individuals and vulnerable populations are being put at serious risk through this contamination. No one should have to worry about whether or not their drinking water is making them sick.
There is insufficient action on the situation, with the source of the contamination having been poorly investigated and no solutions offered for safe alternatives. Long-term effects of continued exposure to contaminated water can cause health problems such as gastroenteritis, neurological impairment, and many other preventable health conditions.
High-level authorities in health and the environment and the community leaders pertaining to the issue are invited to make an immediate response. The following actions must be undertaken:
- Carry out a full independent study into the contamination source.
- Provide safe drinking water to residents during the investigation.
- Repair or replace the damaged pipes, infrastructure, or treatment systems.
Establish regular public reporting on water quality tests.
Hold accountable any parties responsible for this contamination.
