Hanawalt Elementary Proposed Boundary Changes

We, as invested Hanawalt Elementary families, concerned Waterbury neighbors or Des Moines residents, oppose the current Des Moines Public School proposal to change the boundaries for Hanawalt Elementary School, as the proposed boundaries would prevent Hanawalt from being the neighborhood school for the entire Waterbury Neighborhood.

Hanawalt Elementary has been the Waterbury neighborhood school for 100 years. Dividing our neighborhood school area and shifting essentially half the Waterbury students to Windsor Elementary provides significant safety concerns for those children traveling to and from school; all Waterbury students attending Windsor would walk over I-235 and along busy city streets without continuous sidewalks, traveling twice the distance that they would if allowed to stay at Hanawalt. In addition, we are deeply concerned about the impact of this decision on Waterbury's strong neighborhood network and tradition of commitment and personal investment in Hanawalt, our neighborhood school and park.

In summary, the following is being proposed for the boundaries:
- All children in the current boundary area south of Park Avenue will attend Jefferson Elementary school.
- The remainder of the Hanawalt Elementary School Attendance Area will stay as it was prior to realignment discussions, as it stands currently.
