While the U.S. has taken great strides for gay and transgender rights in recent years, some legislators are fighting to preserve counterproductive and discredited anti-gay institutions. Recently, Oklahoma representative Sally Kern reintroduced a bill aimed to protect the institution of anti-gay conversion therapy for minors, a practice that intends to change childrens' sexual or gender identities.
The American Psychological Association discredited conversion therapy after extensive review. There is no evidence to show that the therapy successfully changes one's sexual or gender identity. There is plenty of evidence, though, that shows the practice hurts children. Minors forced to go through the therapy have increased suicidal ideation, reckless sexual behaviors and social isolation.
Regardless of one's views on LGBT rights, there is sufficient proof that gay conversion therapy hurts children and is ineffective. Please sign the petition to urge Oklahoma legislators to vote against Kern's bill and to work toward banning conversion therapy in their state!
