Greene County Missouri is home to many Springfieldians who live and work just outside the city limits. Frequent use of loud Fireworks virtually all year long at any time of the day or night is a noise and peace disturbance that the local Sheriffs are not able to stop, even at a neighboring citizens request. This situation needs to stop. The City of Springfield has laws against fireworks use and as the city has grown, but not incorporated new neighborhoods, many people are literally forced to put up with this noise and peace disturbance on a constant continual basis. This situation is not a once in awhile thing, this is an any time I feel like it, I know my rights and I don't care who I'm Disturbing kind of thing. People can't ask their neighbors to stop because it's disturbing them, the fireworks users simply do not care. In these times of increased crime, shootings, war and terrorism, fireworks sound just like guns, artillery and bombs. People with PTSD are particularly vulnerable to the stress of constant fireworks use by their neighbors, in their own homes, where they should be allowed to live in peace. It's time to grow up Greene County, Missouri, and show consideration towards others No one is against showing patriotism on Independence Day, but your constant fireworks use has nothing to do with patriotism. It's Cheap entertainment for a bored, and somewhat unimaginative citizenry. Please sign this petition to end all use of fireworks except for Independence Day, July 4th.
By signing this petition with your private name and address, you are acknowledging your plea for your State Representative to put forth a new fireworks regulation to be made into law for the State of Missouri, Greene County.
Billy Long
Missouri State Representative
Greene County Missouri
Dear Mr Long:
The residents of Springfield, Missouri, on the outlying Greene County suburbs, are demanding that new regulations and laws be put in place to mirror those of Springfield City, MO, against personal use of all fireworks outside of the Fourth of July Holiday known as Independence Day.
People that have no choice but to live outside the city because of suburban sprawl, have just as much right to peace and quiet as the residents of the City. People in the County have just as much right to protect their buildings and other property from fire hazards and trash from fireworks use. It is a sad state of affairs when some county residents abuse the lack of such regulations and choose to shoot off fireworks any day or night throughout the entire year, and will not stop when asked. It is a sad state of affairs when the Greene County Sheriff's Department answer a complaint of noise or peace disturbance with it's not against the law, have at it. Worse still, there are people in the county right in neighborhoods with houses on top of each other where certain people are shooting off banned professional grade fireworks in the middle of the street during the weeks surrounding July 4th, and no legal action is taken against these folks by law enforcement!!
In these times of increased gun violence, and crime in the Springfield area, not to mention the threats of terrorism American's now all face, fireworks sound exactly like guns being shot, bombs going off and artillery. Our Veterans and others with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder are particularly vulnerable to the stresses caused by fireworks.
Isn't it time to stop this nonsensical arsenal of fireworks use at indiscriminate times? Isn't it time to start fighting against the Fireworks Lobby that pounds money at the State Level to stop the counties of Missouri from regulating fireworks sales and usage? If the current law has to apply to the entire State of Missouri, then change the Law or write a new one.
It's way past time for this to stop out in the county of Greene.
Signed,
Petitioner
