India- Rescue Laxmi, the "Begging Elephant"

Another "begging elephant", 18-year-old Laxmi from Mulund, is suffering from similar health issues as Bijlee. Bijlee was a 58 year old female elephant, who recently died, after being found in critical condition abandoned on the side of a road lying on the ground, her body bleeding in several places, and unable to stand due to obesity and weak hind legs unable to bear her weight due to degenerative joint disease bought on by obesity.

Laxmi, another elephant with the same owner as Bijlee, is suffering from similar health issues as Bijlee. Although only 18, Laxmi is twice the weight she should be, and doctors fear she will meet the same fate as Bijlee.

For years, the owner of the elephants, (Rati Ram Maharaj Goswami), has been feeding the elephants anything and everything- EXCEPT a proper elephant diet. In the wild, they live only on forest grass, leaves and water.

The owner of Laxmi and Bijlee, (Rati Ram Maharaj Goswami), has several other "begging elephants" he uses earn money by performing in marriage ceremonies. It is common in India for elephants to be exploited and forced to beg on streets, in temples and perform in marriage ceremonies or circuses.

Elephants forced to walk on hot pavement and beg on the streets of Mumbai violates both the Wildlife Protection Act of 1972, and the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act of 1960.

We ask that Laxmi (and other elephants in the possession of owner Rati Ram Maharaj Goswami), be removed immediately and sent to a sanctuary where they may recieve veterinary care and a proper diet.
