BC: Help Prevent Opiate Overdose Deaths

BC has a huge problem with opiate death overdoses. Since November 2015 over 320 people have died of opiate overdose in the province. There is, however, a drug, Suboxone, that can help with opiate addiction but it is surrounded by bureaucratic red-tape.

A report that was signed by 73 doctors in the province recommended making access to this drug easier in the province, yet it is being held up in policy review. This drug, which France credits with an 80% drop in opiate overdose deaths in their country when it was deregulated, could help prevent these deaths.

Opiate addicts are a vulnerable population and must have access to the medication that can help their recovery and prevent their deaths.

To the Honourable Terry Lake,

As a person who is concerned with the health of Canada's most vulnerable I call on you to enact the recommendations of the November 2015 report concerning the drug Suboxone: Together, We Can Do This: Strategies to Address BC's Prescription Opiod Crisis.

This report, signed by 73 prominent BC doctors and addictions specialists, made three recommendations in relation to Suboxone. I urge you to enact the following recommendations:

  • Allow all BC doctors to prescribe Suboxone

  • Remove the two-month, daily-witnessed ingestion guideline

  • Use Suboxone as the first line of treatment over methadone

There have been over 320 deaths since this report was published. Suboxone could be a key to preventing opiate overdose deaths.
